5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Hire a Personal Trainer

If you've considered hiring a personal trainer to help you get in shape, you've probably already given some thought about what you need to look for in a personal trainer before you hire her. But have you thought about what you need to know about yourself before you begin a new personal training program?

questions to ask yourself before you hire a personal trainer1. Why do you need a personal trainer? Why can't you get in shape by yourself? There's no wrong answer to this question, and there's certainly no shame in needing help, but you need to know why you think a trainer can help you. Do you need basic exercise instruction? Are you training for an athletic event? Do you have unhealthy habits that you're trying to change? Do you believe that a regular appointment with a trainer will help keep you on track? Do you need a fitness program specially designed for older adults?

2. What has kept you from achieving your fitness goals in the past? Have you not found a workout that you enjoy? Do you have trouble managing your time? Are unresolved emotional issues driving your eating habits? An honest answer to this question can help you and your personal trainer develop a program that addresses your trouble spots and gets you past your road blocks.

3. What has been your greatest success in life? Sometimes your fitness failures can seem insurmountable, but your successes in other areas of your life can help you see and leverage your strengths. Understanding why and how you've managed to achieve your other successes can help your personal trainer develop an action plan that uses your own strengths to achieve your fitness goals.

4. Are you ready to make the changes you need to achieve your fitness goals? Remember that a personal trainer is a guide. She knows the quickest and safest routes to get you to your fitness goal, but the journey is still yours to take and the work is still yours to do. Your personal trainer can help keep you on the right path, but you still have to take every step yourself, so be sure you're ready for the trip.

5. What kind of personal training experience are you hoping for? Do you need someone yelling at you and pushing you beyond your limits? Do you need to be cajoled and prodded to get through your fitness routine? Or do you need patient explanations and positive encouragement? Understanding your own learning style and motivational triggers will help you find the personal trainer who's right for you.

Hiring a personal trainer can be the start of a new life of healthy choices that make you feel great. It's a big decision to make, and you'll get better results and be happier with your decision if you know the answers to these five questions first.
